Havanese outdoors

In general the Havanese is not prone to wander off. However a busy event or noise such as fireworks in the neighborhood could be troublesome for your Havanese or any pet for that matter. The first thing to remember is that if there are busy events or a day with noise and fireworks think of your Havanese before the event. These are days to keep a special eye on your pet and strive to keep him safe and comfortable.

If the unthinkable occurs and your Havanese becomes lost, here are some tips to help.

Safeguard first. Have an identification chip installed by your vet. If your Havanese should become lost, this GREATLY increases the chances that he will be recovered and returned to you. ID chips are inexpensive and most all vets can install them for a small fee. The microchip is inserted under the skin in the neck and is painless to your Havanese. The microchip has the owner's contact information. If you move the information can and SHOULD be updated by your vet. Your Havanese should be wearing a collar with your telephone number on it and his rabies tag. The rabies tag is more important than you may think, as many communities have regulations that state a found dog that is not wearing a rabies tag be put to death if there was a rabies alert in the area.

Start by calling your pet by name where he was last seen since your Havanese will tend to stay in the area that they are familiar with. Look around the outside of your house first; he may be hiding around your house. Walk the area or the neighborhood where he was lost. Talk to people and describe your pet. If you have kids in your neighborhood, get them involved in the search. When you are on the search take time to stop and be quiet for a few seconds and listen for any possible response from your Havanese. It is not advisable to search for your Havanese alone, take a family member or friend with you.

If your Havanese becomes lost, notify the animal shelters and animal control in the area. Describe your pet and tell them where he was last seen. If there are any pet rescue agencies in your area talk to them as they have their own network that may help you.

Use posters and offer a reward, but do not state the amount. Some other tips on using posters or flyers: Only put your telephone numbers on any flyer or poster. Use brightly colored paper, a photo of your pet if possible will help. Post them all around the vicinity including churches, community bulletin boards, pet stores and of course on telephone poles.

Use the internet as there are sites and message boards that are dedicated to help find lost pets. Remember Craigslist.org where you can place a free message. There are also list groups on Yahoo that are dedicated to help find lost pets. Check the newspapers in the found pets section if you have one.

Lost pet scams: Unfortunately there are individuals who will take advantage of any situation, so here is some advice. Never arrange to get your pet alone. Take a family member or a friend and preferably meet in a public area. If you know the person you are dealing with that is different. Never, never give or send money to anyone who claims to have your pet in advance. This is an indication of a scam. In such a situation you will lose your money and not get your pet back.
