Havanese

Fitness First

Use quality dog food that is made for dogs and has quality ingredients. You can make your own pet food, but if you do, find veterinarian approved recipes such as those found in books such as Real Food for Dogs by Arden Moore and Better Food for Dogs by Bastin, Ashton and Nixon. Your Havanese will be healthier, happier and live longer when fed proper food. Find a place where he can eat in peace. Keep the children and yourself away while he is eating.

Remember that the Havanese like to nap. Those "Havanese naps" are important and part of the breed personality. They often like to nap on a doggie bed. Keep one or two around and be sure to keep them laundered on a regular basis. Put the beds away from the traffic of passing feet.

Find time to exercise your Havanese with walks and play. They want and need attention and you must find time to devote to these essentials.

Exercise

Remember that diet and exercise will keep your Havanese in shape. If your Havanese is not kept in balance with exercise and a proper diet a weight problem can develop. If your Havanese starts to get fat change the diet. There are high quality dog foods that have lower calories and will help. Keep in mind that just like humans any new "exercise program" must be done with care. If you throw a dog into a new exercise program without care and consulting your vet you could cause health risks.

Wag That Tail

The Havanese loves to wag his tail. It is a sign of happiness and friendliness. A wagging tail is a good sign. When the tail goes between his legs it is a sign of fear or anxiety.

Swimming

Havanese do like water, but many of them need to be introduced to the water slowly. This is a sport and leisure activity that often is up to likes of the individual Havanese. Never force your Havanese into the water if he does not want to go.

Health Spas

Yes it is now possible to take your Havanese to luxury resorts and spas that offer packages of relaxation and fitness for your pet. These include massage, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and aromatherapy. Luxury is now not reserved to only humans.

Grooming

Havanese generally like grooming if it becomes part of the regular routines. Some owners use professional groomers, others do it themselves. If you want to do the grooming yourself find a groomer that will show the many tips and tricks of this trade. Total grooming includes the bath, tooth brushing, nail clipping and ear cleaning.

Pamper Services

It is now possible to find services to pamper your Havanese as much as you want. These services include dog walkers, pet taxis; dog day care; groomers; pet sitters; complimentary therapists; dog hotels; and personal trainers. When you use any of these services do your research. Ask for references and speak to dog owners who have used their services. Whenever possible observe their work and services, and make sure both your and your Havanese are happy with the service they are getting.

Accessories for Your Havanese

There are now accessories galore for the Havanese. One can find everything from jewelry to clips and bows to tags, doggles (sun glasses) and shoes and boots. These can be fun and showy, but keep in mind any accessory should be safe and harmless to your pet. Using common sense in choosing accessories for your Havanese is perhaps the best advice. Remember any collar must fit just right. Too loose and the collar will slip over his head, too tight and it can cause choking. The rule of thumb is that you should be able to slip two fingers under a collar when it is fastened.

Frosty Paws Ice Cream and Birthday Cake

Source: www.collargirl.com

  • 32 oz. plain yogurt
  • 1 mashed banana
  • 2 T peanut butter
  • 2 T honey

It’s true dairy products aren’t good for dogs, but yogurt contains much less lactase than regular milk and the live cultures are great for your dog’s digestive system. This dog ice cream recipe is delicious and good for your pet!

1. Mix all these ingredients in your blender, then dump into ice cube trays, paper cups, or even a kong toy to freeze and serve.

2. If you want to go all out for your mutt you can freeze these homemade frosty paws just like you would homemade ice cream. A salt-less automatic ice cream maker makes this as easy as using any other appliance in your home and the frosty paws will be ready to serve in 10 minutes.

For the ultimate treat, appropriate for desert at a doggy birthday party, follow steps one and two, then take the mostly frozen dog ice cream product of number two and spread it 1” to 1½” thick on wax paper. Freeze for five minutes and then remove dog ice cream from freezer. Next, use a paw shaped cookie cutter to cut a paw shaped “frosty paws”, remove ice cream around edges, and return paw shapes to the freezer to freeze solid.

NOTE: This can also be made with baby meat instead of the fruit and peanut butter.
